ODT, OpenOffice_Document (.odt)
The .odt file format
ODT is an open source word processor created by Sun Microsystems and forms part of the Open Office program suite. It is used to create and manage spreadsheets, charts, presentations, and word documents. Open Office can be opened in MS Word or easily converted into DOC and DOCX files. It can be downloaded for free without paying licensing fees, hence its popularity compared to Microsoft office. It can also be operated on different OS platforms.
.odt technical details
The OpenDocument text file format used both in free software and licensed software, (applied in stand-alone as well as web based office suites), was developed by a Technical Committee (TC) under the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards industry group. ODT files are built on many components, including SVG-Scalable Vector Graphics and SMIL- synchronized multimedia integration language used in graphic animation. They have all been subjected to the Web Accessibility Initiative processes by the World Wide Web Consortium.
