ODS, OpenOffice ODS spreadsheet (.ods)

The .ods file format

OpenDocument, is a file format used to create spreadsheets, word documents, charts and presentations based on XML programming tool. ODS is popular due to support across multiple application programs including free programs like OpenOffice and LibreOffice Suite. Software programs with the ODS file extension save files as XLSX files and similar extensions. However there is inadequate image support when converting between ODS and Excel spreadsheets.

.ods technical details

OpenDocument Format was developed by the OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards), and is a free and open format. This format uses an XML document as its root element, and is capable of being archived into a zip format to hold several files and directories while benefiting from ZIP’s lossless compression. By separating various components such as content and metadata into different XML files, OpenDocument utilizes the separation of concerns feature to its advantage.
