TARGZ, Archive File (.tar.gz)
The .tar.gz file format
The tar utility included in most Linux distributions can extract .tar.gz files by passing the z option, for example, tar -zxf file.tar.gz. Such files are often referred to as tarball.
.tar.gz technical details
A file with the .tar.gz extension will be using Gzip compression application. This is done by identifying and temporarily replacing similar bits of data within the file, which then reduces the overall size of the file. This is a popular way of compression and is well established for use with TAR files. It is common now-a-days for sending and receiving web page data.
