MP2 stands for MPEG-1 Audio Layer II, an audio compression format used primarily for digital radio and television broadcasting. It provides a good balance between sound quality and file size, making it popular before MP3 became widespread. Originally standardized in the early 1990s, MP2 was designed to handle audio efficiently in streaming and broadcast environments. Despite being overshadowed by newer formats, it remains in use in professional broadcasting today.
MP2 compresses audio by removing parts of sound that are less perceptible to human ears, using psychoacoustic models similar to MP3 but with a simpler algorithm. It typically supports bit rates from 32 kbps to 384 kbps, with 192 kbps being common for good quality stereo sound. The format uses a frame-based structure and supports up to two channels of audio. MP2 decoding is less computationally intensive compared to MP3, which contributed to its early adoption in hardware devices.
MP2 files are less common for everyday music listening but are still favored in some European digital radio stations. The format is known for its robustness against transmission errors, which is why broadcasters preferred it in the past. Interestingly, the MP2 codec was part of the MPEG-1 standard, which was one of the first efforts to compress multimedia content effectively. Its resilience makes it suitable for live broadcasts where data loss might occur.
