VOC files are audio files originally created by Creative Labs for their Sound Blaster cards in the early 1990s. They store digitized audio data in a format that was popular in early PC sound applications and games. Despite being largely replaced by more modern audio formats, VOC files remain important for preserving retro multimedia content.
VOC files use a chunk-based structure where each chunk defines different parameters like audio data, silence, or repeat instructions. The format supports multiple sampling rates and bit depths, usually up to 44.1 kHz and 8-bit or 16-bit audio. Because the format was designed for limited hardware, VOC files often have smaller sizes but lower fidelity compared to modern audio formats.
The VOC format was one of the first widely used audio formats for PC sound cards, making it a key part of early digital audio history. VOC files can contain various types of audio data including PCM, ADPCM, and other compressed formats. Many media players today can still recognize and play VOC files, often requiring specific codecs or plugins.
