MOBI is an eBook file format designed primarily for mobile devices and e-readers. It allows users to read digital books with formatting that adapts well to smaller screens. Originally developed by Mobipocket, it was one of the first widely used eBook formats and paved the way for modern digital reading.
MOBI uses a container format based on the Open eBook standard and is built on top of the PalmDOC format. It supports features like reflowable text, embedded images, and JavaScript for interactive content. One technical limitation is that it doesn't natively support multimedia elements, which newer formats like EPUB handle better.
MOBI files often support complex content like annotations, bookmarks, and DRM protection, ensuring both usability and security. Amazon acquired Mobipocket in 2005, which influenced the development of the Kindle's proprietary AZW format based on MOBI. Despite newer formats emerging, MOBI remains compatible with many e-reader devices.
