Based on BIFF8 binary format; comprises a series of records for cell data, formatting, macros, and worksheet properties; supported (with some limitations) by LibreOffice and various BIFF-reading libraries.
Replaced by .xltx/.xltm in Office 2007+ but still used for backward compatibility; can include VBA project streams and preconfigured worksheets.
