About CDDA (.CDDA)
CDDA files contain raw audio data extracted from Compact Discs, representing uncompressed sound tracks. These files are often used in audio editing and playback applications to preserve the original sound quality without compression artifacts. The format is essential for audiophiles who demand lossless audio reproduction. Interestingly, the CDDA standard was defined in the Red Book audio CD specification released by Sony and Philips in 1980.
Technical Details
Technically, CDDA files are raw PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) audio data with a sampling rate of 44,100 Hz and a bit depth of 16 bits per sample per channel. They are typically stored as .wav or .cdda files but can also be extracted as raw binary streams. The format does not include metadata or compression, which contributes to its large file size compared to compressed formats. The audio data is organized in sectors of 2352 bytes, each corresponding to 1/75th of a second of audio playback.
Additional Information & Use Cases
CDDA stands for Compact Disc Digital Audio, which is the standard format for audio CDs widely used since the 1980s. These files store audio in a 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo PCM format, ensuring high-fidelity sound. Unlike compressed formats such as MP3, CDDA files retain all original audio information, making them large in size. CDDA is the basis for many digital audio formats and was a major step in the transition from analog to digital music.
