PCX is an image file format originally developed by ZSoft Corporation for their PC Paintbrush software in the 1980s. It was one of the first widely supported formats for bitmap images on early IBM PCs. PCX files store raster images and were commonly used before more advanced formats like PNG became popular.
PCX files use a Run-Length Encoding (RLE) compression algorithm to reduce file size efficiently. The format supports indexed color palettes with up to 256 colors and can also handle monochrome and 24-bit true color images. Each PCX file contains a header followed by image data, making it straightforward to parse and edit.
PCX files typically use lossless compression, preserving image quality without data loss, which was notable for its time. Although largely replaced by modern formats, PCX is still supported by many graphic editing programs. Its simplicity made it a standard in early computer graphics applications.
