SR2 files are commonly associated with Sony's RAW image format used by Alpha series digital cameras. These files store uncompressed and minimally processed image data, allowing for higher quality photo edits. The SR2 format was introduced to provide photographers with greater flexibility in post-processing compared to standard JPEG files.
SR2 files use a proprietary compression method that preserves raw sensor data alongside metadata such as camera settings and lens information. They typically contain a Bayer filter pattern, which requires demosaicing to convert into a full-color image. Due to their unprocessed nature, SR2 files offer a greater dynamic range and color depth than compressed formats like JPEG.
These files retain all the information captured by the camera sensor, which is why they are much larger than typical image files. Many professional photo editing software programs can open SR2 files, enabling detailed adjustments to exposure, color, and sharpness. Interestingly, Sony has since moved on to the newer ARW format, which offers improved features and compatibility.
