YUV is a color encoding system used mainly in video processing and broadcasting. It separates image luminance from chrominance, which helps in compressing and transmitting video efficiently. Originally developed for analog color television, YUV continues to be important in digital video formats today.
A YUV file typically stores raw or encoded video data with luminance (Y) and two chrominance components (U and V). These components are often subsampled to reduce data size, such as in YUV420 or YUV422 formats. The separation of brightness and color data in YUV helps in processing tasks like color correction and compression.
YUV allows for better compression by reducing color information without significantly affecting visual quality, which is why it's widely used in video codecs and broadcasting. It is often converted to RGB for display on screens. Interestingly, the YUV model was designed to be compatible with black-and-white TV sets, preserving backward compatibility.
